Equinox is IFS Higher Level certified by way of an unannounced audit. Horse meat and animal welfare Horses are not reared for meat. Both in Europe and the rest of the world, individuals and farmers keep horses for various reasons: recreation, beasts of burden, breeding (stud farm), culture (e.g. Gauchos in Argentina), etc),... When one or more horses are no longer needed (e.g. new foals purchased), the owner may sell the horses to abattoirs, if necessary via a horse trader. A few horses whose medical history can be checked, and which are healthy on arrival at the abattoir, are slaughtered for human consumption. The control systems (chips, passports, etc. ) differ from country to country, but a few countries whose control systems have been approved by the EC are legally allowed to export horse meat to Europe. At every stage of the process, control checks are conducted by veterinary surgeons, and analyses are also carried out in the abattoir, upon arrival in Europe, at the boners and slicers, and at the distributors. In addition to these legal requirements, Equinox and its suppliers do their utmost to guarantee safe, high-quality meat produced from healthy animals. External audit agencies have been appointed to control animal welfare, tracing and quality. In addition, Equinox is a member of Respectful Life : improvements in animal welfare are implemented at the suppliers in cooperation with lecturers from the Catholic University of Leuven and are based on scientific arguments.
